Details

Day 1

Kota Kinabalu

Welcome to Malaysian Borneo! Your adventure starts in the capital of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu. The city is perfectly positioned between the jungle and South China Sea and is full of ancient architecture. There will be a 6pm welcome meeting, but if you arrive early, get out and explore Kota Kinabalu. Wander the picturesque streets, visit the Sabah State Museum or nearby Mari Mari Cultural Village.

Day 2

Kinabalu National Park

Spend the day at Mount Kinabalu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site named after Borneo’s highest mountain. The park covers over 760 square kilometres and boasts over 4,500 different types of plants, over 326 bird species and over 100 types of mammals. Take a guided walk around the lower trails, which will take you through lush jungle teeming with wildlife.

Look out for exotic birds such as Serpent Eagles, as well as monkeys, snakes and all manner of colourful insects. You’ll also get to explore the stunning Botanical Gardens, which showcase diverse native flora and fauna. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing.

Breakfast included.

Day 3

Poring hot springs

Wake for sunrise views of Mount Kinabalu and then take a one-hour trip to Poring Hot Springs. Soak in the famous, mineral-rich thermal pools, which are thought to have healing powers. You can also take a walk on some of the reserve’s scenic nature trails, including the Canopy Walk, where you can spot wildlife and stop at crystal waterfalls to cool off. Optional activities include visiting the Orchid Conservation Centre and Kundasang War Memorial.

In the evening, you’ll stay at a reconstructed longhouse on a tea plantation. These traditional Bornean houses have a long, communal room and are built on stilts. Twin or triple share rooms are simple, with fans and shared bathrooms. Enjoy the peaceful environment and wake to misty morning views of the surrounding fields.

Breakfast included.

Day 4

Kinabatangan Eco Camp

Set off on an epic jungle adventure, travelling by private bus to Batu Puteh. This rustic village lies on the banks of the mighty Kinabatangan River, where you’ll be hosted by KOPEL, a local community conservation organisation. KOPEL runs reforestation projects by planting trees and helps local villagers, farmers and fishermen make a sustainable living from the forest. Their work has helped restore over 1,000 hectares of forest, increasing wildlife in the area.

Arrive in time for lunch and enjoy a traditional cooking lesson at the jungle camp with your hosts. You’ll learn all about forest conservation and head into the jungle on a 2hour boat trip to your accommodation near Oxbow Lake, keeping an eye out for crocodiles, macaques and the big-nosed proboscis monkeys. After settling into camp, you’ll take a sunset boat trip and an hour-long night walk through the jungle. A guide will point out nocturnal animals and all types of insects along the way. Return to your jungle camp by an oxbow lake, fresh up for dinner and let the cicadas sing you to sleep.

Note that you’ll leave your main  luggage at the KOPEL office and take an overnight bag to camp. Don’t forget a torch, rain jacket and insect repellent. Jungle huts have basic facilities with cold water and no electricity, mosquito nets are provided. It’s all part of the adventure!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 5

Sandakan

Rise at dawn for another cruise on the river, spotting birds, monkeys and if you’re very lucky, wild orangutans. Afterwards there will be time to rest and soak up the sights and sounds of the jungle in a hammock back at camp. Following this final cruise, drive back to Sandakan. This city is full of Cantonese influence evident in the lively harbourside market, the many Chinese temples and the local cuisine. There will be time upon arrival to catch up on laundry and banking, as well as to explore the city or relax by the pool.

Breakfast included.

Day 6

Turtle Island

Leave your large bags at the hotel and transfer to a nearby jetty, then board a speedboat bound for Turtle Island. Travel past small fishing villages and bamboo fish traps, arriving at Turtle Island Marine Park after about an hour. Spend the day as you please, either swimming, relaxing on the sand or snorkelling with some hired gear. Under the cover of darkness, watch as giant green turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs under the moonlight. Watch as researchers release protected hatchlings and guide them in their frantic dash to the ocean. It's a moving experience that is bound to be rewarding for you and your family, but please be aware that this is a very delicate environment and you must follow instructions from your leader and the local rangers to ensure minimal impact on the turtles. Spend the night on this beautiful island in basic accommodation.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Day 7

Sepilok

Wake up on the beautiful island and enjoy breakfast before returning to the mainland. Collect your bags and make the 45-minute drive by minibus to a guesthouse located near the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. The centre was set up to help re-introduce these wonderful creatures back into the wild after a life of domestication or having been orphaned. Rather than just keep the animals in a sanctuary, the centre attempts to teach them the life skills they need to be introduced back into the wild. You’ll get the chance to watch these incredible, human-like creatures feed at viewing platforms throughout the day and watch a short film about the centre’s vital work. The viewing area is behind one-way glass so as not to disturb the animals.

If you simply can’t get enough of Borneo’s incredible wildlife, you can choose to visit glossy-coated sun bears today at a recently opened conservation centre, where sun bears that have been rescued from mistreatment are cared for. Those who have fallen in love with the bulbous noses of the proboscis monkeys can visit a sanctuary dedicated to helping these endangered creatures. Alternatively, spend some time relaxing and cooling off by the pool.

Breakfast included.

Day 8

Beringgis Beach Resort

Take a flight back to Kota Kinabalu (approx one hour). Keep in mind that the luggage allowance for this flight is only 15 kg, and any excess baggage may incur a further charge. Drive to the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu to our seaside resort on Beringgis Beach. Take the opportunity to relax, have a swim, enjoy a drink and enjoy the sunset.
